Changing Face of World Missions - 1748 Words

In Matthew 28:19-20, Matthew records Jesus’ last words to His disciples these verses have become known as â€Å"The Great Commission.†Since, the giving of the Great Commission followers of Christ has left their own culture in order to engage another with the saving message of the Gospel. Numerous books, articles and blogs have been written on the subject of World Evangelization or Missions. One such book on missions is called, â€Å"The Changing Face of World Missions: Engaging Contemporary Issues and Trends† this book was written by Michael Pocock, Gailyn Van Rheenen, and Douglas McConnell. All three men are experts in the field of missions; the writers have served overseas and are now currently engaged in equipping the next generation through†¦show more content†¦While the book has one over-arching thesis, â€Å"inform the reader about the changing face of globalization† (12) each section has a thesis which helps to direct the thoughts of the re aders and writers in a particular section. The authors are not attempting to argue for one particular aspect of world missions but rather they are attempting to provide an overview of the issues which are taking place in world missions. The first section deals with the issue of missions within a larger global context. The authors explain their purpose is to, â€Å"describe major trends in the world to which we minister† (14). The text deals with globalization, changing demographics, the movement of world religions and the world’s shift from modernity to post modernity. The authors argue for an emphasis on globalization stressing that globalization changes the context in which we minister. â€Å"Globalization matters because it fundamentally changes the contexts in which we minister; the way people and cultures perceive each other; how people think and the means available to reach them† (24). Globalization has affected the way Christians view the world and also how Christians share the Gospel. The authors identify the changing demographics and engage the reasons why individuals are moving away from their country of birth.
